How We Made Diwali Cleaning Fun for Kids + Free Printables

⏱️ Parents’ quick plan (30-second read)

  • What: turn Diwali cleaning into a 7-day treasure quest
  • Time: 30 minutes a day, one zone a day
  • Ages: 3 to 12, with you as sidekick
  • You need: 4 boxes or bags, a timer, stickers, the free chart
  • Start by: Sunday 1 November, so you finish before Diwali (Sunday 8 November)
  • Free printable: Clean-up Quest chart, at the end of this post

Why I turned cleaning into a treasure hunt

Every Diwali, my sister and I would “accidentally” open the old toy cupboard mid-cleaning. Hungry Hippos, wooden blocks, pick-up sticks, Tambola. Cleaning stopped, playing started.

As we grew up, those toys came out only once a year, at Diwali. We never had the heart to give them away, until my son was born.

Today Vaidik has his own treasure chest box: fidgets, magnets, the watch from his bua, a keepsake from his masi, origami and what not. That box is not up for negotiation.

The lesson: Diwali cleaning with kids isn’t about getting rid of things. It’s about deciding, together, what stays in our story.

Why we clean before Diwali (tell your kids this)

  • 🪔 A special guest is coming. We believe Goddess Lakshmi visits homes that are clean, bright and welcoming.
  • 🌱 A fresh start. For many Indian families, Diwali marks a new year. Out with the old, in with the new.
  • 🤝 Sharing is part of it. What we don’t use can bring joy to someone else.

Say it in one line: “Lakshmi Maa loves a clean, happy home. Let’s make space for her, and for new memories.”

How the quest works

The 30-minute mission (same every day)

  1. Observe (5 min): look at everything in the zone. No touching yet.
  2. Spot (5 min): note what isn’t used, isn’t played with, or won’t be again.
  3. Sort (15 min): drop each item into one of the four quest boxes.
  4. Reset (5 min): put keepers back, wipe the shelf, add a sticker to the chart.

Adjust the steps to suit you and your child. One drawer in 30 minutes still counts.

The four quest boxes

The sorting chant

Teach it on Day 1. Kids shout it at every item.

Broken, broken, out it goes! Good but small? Pass to little ones! Good but done? Gift to someone! All my treasures? Keep them home!

7💎 Treasure Chest + Lakshmi WelcomeTell the story behind each keepsake

Day 1 · Toy Kingdom 🧸

  • Sort: keep, donate, discard. Broken toys go out.
  • Toys in every room? Run a mini mission per spot: 3 minutes to observe, then sort. Adapt it to your home.
  • Parent tip: rotate loved-but-ignored toys. Pack them away for a month, then bring them back as “new”.

Day 2 · Book Nook 📚

  • Sort: keep or donate only. Never bin books.
  • Torn or used up? Recycle or upcycle into bookmarks and gift wrap.
  • Parent tip: shelve keepers as “reading now”, “reading soon” and “forever favourites”.

Day 3 · Wardrobe Run 👕

Day 4 · Desk HQ ✏️

  • Why it matters: the desk is the most important spot. A cluttered desk means a cluttered study time.
  • Set it up: pencil boxes, a desk organiser and pen stands, so everything has a home.
  • Parent tip: let your child decide where things live. They’ll keep up a system they designed.

Day 5 · Kitchen Helpers 🍳

  • Kid jobs: dig out things buried deep in shelves, make jar labels, wipe jars and boxes with a cloth, put things back.
  • Safety: knives, glass and heavy items stay with you.

Day 6 · Bathroom and Dressing 🧴

  • Sort: expired products, creams and medicines go out. So does broken stuff.
  • Kid job: older kids read expiry dates on creams and toiletries.
  • Safety: medicines are a grown-up job only. Ask your pharmacy how to dispose of them safely.

Day 7 · Treasure Chest + Lakshmi Welcome 💎

  • Open the treasure chest together. For each keepsake, ask: “What’s the story behind this one?”
  • Shine the main door and entrance, ready for rangoli, toran and diyas.
  • Hand over the certificate. Your kids are now official Treasure Keepers.
  • [Your input: photo or line about what came out of Vaidik’s treasure chest]

Jobs by age

AgeKids canYou handle
3 to 5Drop toys in boxes, wipe low shelves, add stickers, sing the chantFinal calls, anything high, heavy or sharp
6 to 8Sort books and toys, run the fashion show, test pens, stick labelsMedicines, glass, donation drop-offs
9 to 12Run a zone with light supervision, read expiry dates, pack donation bagsMedicines, final check on what leaves

Working parent? Here is my shortcut ⚡

  • Split it: Observe + Spot on a weeknight (10 min), Sort + Reset the next day (20 min).
  • Shrink the zone: one shelf instead of a whole cupboard still earns a sticker.
  • Double up on weekends: two zones Saturday, two zones Sunday.
  • Boxes by the door: donations go out in one trip.
  • Outsource the heavy stuff: fans, windows, and sofas can go to professionals. Keep sorting as family time.
  • Skip perfect: three zones done still teaches the big lesson: How To Decide.
